The Runner’s best friend?

Many have been wondering which parts of training and preparing are the most important for a successful run. There is obviously a great difference between each and every runner and other endurance athletes what they feel is most important when it comes to performing. Water must rank high as water is the most important nutrient whether you are a runner or not. My best friend is the banana and now I will tell you why.

Bananas are

  • A great source of energy. The carbohydrates in banana are easy to digest and are richer in energy than many other fruits. This can be beneficial since many runners many times lack energy to complete long runs and races.
  • One of the riches sources of potassium. Potassium has several very important roles in the body and plays a crucial role in heart rate regulation and muscle contraction. For a enjoyable, cramp free run, adequate amounts of potassium play an important part.
  • A good source of Vitamin B6. This water soluble vitamin plays a role in a healthy oxygen transport and energy metabolism just to name two major roles that should spark the interest of every runner.
  • High in magnesium, the “cramp free” mineral. Many runners, triathletes, swimmers and other endurance athletes experience muscle cramps during workouts, races and even during rest. This can be due to many different reasons but focusing on magnesium rich foods can help almost any athlete with workout-damaging muscle cramps. One large banana contains on average 45-50 milligrams of magnesium.
  • Easy to eat during runs and while riding the bike! :)

So, pick up a banana for better, more enjoyable running!
